The ancient Academy of San Luca in via Ripetta

Institute of Fine Arts Rome

One of the most renowned institutes in Italy for artistic culture is theAcademy of Fine Arts of Rome. Its location at the 'Ferro di Cavallo' of Camporese in via di Ripetta dates back to the mid-nineteenth century. A residential building repurposed as the headquarters of the Academy and enriched with new rooms for use by the Free School of the Nude. The Academy has its roots in the pontifical Academy of San Luca established at the end of the 16th century to bring together in a single place of study the Arts of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

But the objective is not only to bring together the figurative arts in a center of excellence but also to create a place of meeting and fruitful dialogue between established artists and the new expressive lever in an open laboratory. In this way the Academy is in line with other similar realities that were establishing themselves throughout Europe. In an era of great social ferment, art was also affected by the new wind while the learning of techniques required leaving the workshops. That knowledge was institutionalized was in the logic of the times.

The scholastic transmission of knowledge, together with contacts and exchanges with other European Academies, open up a fertile and fruitful dialogue between styles and trends. A different way of conceiving representation that will shape new artists and make the Academy an international point of reference. Under the impulse of the trends of the time, the Accademia del Nudo was born in 1754, always under the aegis of the Accademia di San Luca, which in the meantime also became responsible for the care of the Roman artistic heritage inside and outside the Papal State.

1870 was the turning point. The request of a group of artists for the secularization and nationalization of the Academy was accepted, which from now on would be divided into two sections, historical and educational. The Academy is already hosted by the 'Ferro di Cavallo' in Via di Ripetta and has become the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome. And as such it will maintain its role in training young talent with great commitment in the name of quality, professionalism, respecting the constructive dialogue between teaching and students.

Rich in its artistic and historical traditions, the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome today, despite experiencing a phase of reform due to its passage to the MIUR, continues on the path of innovative research into artistic expression. While the role of curating exhibitions, calls and competitions, meetings and conferences remains at the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca, located in Piazza dell'Accademia di San Luca, in compliance with its statutory objective of promoting Italian Arts and Architecture.
